Ward’s Gym offers Gi and No-Gi Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes, women’s self defence, boxing and MMA conditioning sessions each week. Our martial arts membership also includes two HIT class sessions per week included in the one price. Any top level Jiu Jitsu practitioner follows a strict strength and conditioning program. They also know the importance of correct nutrition and recovery to keeping their bodies running at 100% so they can compete at the highest level. Our fully equipped strength and conditioning facility and experienced coaching staff are here to help with these facets of your health and fitness.

Whether you’re just looking to improve your fitness and self confidence knowing you can handle yourself or wanting to compete, we’ll make sure you are fitter and stronger than the competition before you step on the mat.

Women’s Jiu Jitsu / Self Defense

Every Wednesday night at 7pm we run a women’s only jiu jitsu / self defense class. This is a great introduction to both jiu jitsu and our gym environment in the least intimidating way. Feel comfortable trying out jiu jitsu with other beginnners and learn some very valuable self defense strategies that could one day save your life. Gavin Ward is the head instructor at Ward’s Gym. Gavin started training with Ben Hall (Head instructor of Carlson Gracie Team Australia) in 2006. He moved to New York in 2008 to train under Renzo Gracie, where he later received his Blue Belt. In 2009 Gavin moved back to Melbourne to continue his training with Ben Hall and was awarded his Purple Belt in 2012 and Brown Belt in Carlson Gracie Jiu Jitsu in 2015.

Always representing the Carlson Gracie Team with pride and professionalism Gavin has won gold at State, National and International competitions. Gavin’s experience in competition coupled with years of tutelage from some of the best Jiu Jitsu practitioners in the world has groomed him into the athlete, mentor and instructor that he is today.

What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art that focuses on grappling and ground fighting both as a sport and a self defense system. An opponent can be taken to the ground using a range of sweeps and takedowns and then controlled or forced to submit with a variety of joint locks and chokeholds.
